Royals Rumblings – News for November 20, 2019 (Royals Review)

Today is the deadline for protecting players from being moved to other teams in the Rule 5 draft, by adding them to the 40-man roster. Let’s keep an eye on Max’s thoughts from yesterday as decisions shake out.

Here is a case for protecting lefty Foster Griffin, from Alec Lewis at The Athletic.

The way in which Griffin pitched was also different in comparison to most pitching prospects in 2019. His fastball never eclipsed the mid-90s; he benefited from the sheer strategy of pitching and much less on the brute force of throwing.

“You outsmart a guy to get him out,” Griffin said. “That’s where I find joy, in the sequences that you throw. In. Out. Hard. Soft. Up. Down. When you and a catcher get on the same page in tricking guys, that’s when the game’s the most fun.”

Lynn Worthy at the KC Star checks in with a few of the higher-profile additions to the Royals farm system from this past summer, including the team’s top draft pick, Bobby Witt, Jr.

After working briefly with minor league director of performance science/player development John Wagle, Witt has already shown improved speed. He could start next season at Low-A Lexington.
