Good morning, Birdland!
Teams have until 8 p.m. ET tonight to make decisions on their Rule 5 eligible players. If the organization does not want to risk losing them to next month’s draft, then those players have to be added to the 40-man roster. If the club is willing to take the chance, then they can leave them unprotected and risk losing them a few weeks from now.
This very website and this very writer put together a quick overview of what qualifies a player for Rule 5 eligibility and which players the Orioles are at risk of losing. You should totally go read that.
If you don’t have the time, just know that the O’s have five open spots on their 40-man and seven of their top 30 prospects are Rule 5 eligible. That presents a bit of a quandary. Mike Elias is unlikely to protect them all. Perhaps there will be some wheeling and deadline ahead of the deadline. Or maybe it’s just relatively boring, and we have to wait until the draft for anything of consequence to actually occur.
