Late Wednesday night, presumably before the 8:00 p.m. deadline to do so, the Phillies added some names to their 40 man roster ahead of the freeze before the Rule V draft.
#Phillies add RHP Garrett Cleavinger, RHP Mauricio Llovera and LHP JoJo Romero to 40-man roster, protecting them from Rule 5 Draft. Also acquired Triple-A left-hander Cristopher Sanchez from Rays for minor league INF Curtis Mead. Added Sanchez to 40-man. 39 players on 40-man.

Had you been following the Phillies’ minor league systems, their protection of Jojo Romero and Mauricio Llovera shouldn’t be all that surprising. Both represent good depth for the team to have and stand at least a shot of making the major league bullpen during spring training. It’s Garrett Cleavinger that might be a bit surprising. However, maybe we shouldn’t be all that surprised.
Cleavinger (Hellickson trade) has long had control problems. April to July 36.2 IP 30 BB.
In August he was mid to upper 90s and went 14.2 IP 4 H 2 R 1 ER 3 BB 22 K for Reading
