Smith, 31, hit .251/.318/.393/.710 in 211 plate appearances while playing subpar defense for the Halos in 2019. He was the backup for the majority of the year, first behind Jonathan Lucroy then Max Stassi. He suffered a concussion in the early part of the season that kept him out for a while. MLB Trade Rumors projected him to earn $1.3 million in 2020.
That means the Angels are keeping Tommy La Stella ($2.9 million), Cam Bedrosian ($2.8 million), Andrew Heaney ($5.0 million), Hansel Robles ($4.0 million), Max Stassi ($800 K), Brian Goodwin ($2.1 million), Keynan Middleton ($800 K), and Noe Ramirez ($1.0 million). Numbers in parenthesis are projected values for 2020.
The Angels already did not tender contracts to Luis Garcia, Justin Bour, and Nick Tropeano.
As of the writing of this piece, the only catchers on the Angels 40-man roster are Max Stassi and Anthony Bemboom. Stassi may not be ready for Opening Day.
