Padres History: Colbert leads Friars over Giants in 15-inning slugfest (Gaslamp Ball)


On this date in San Diego Padres history, the Friars won a 15-inning back-and-forth battle over the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park. To this day, the 17 runs scored and the 21 hits recorded by the Padres remain records for a game that went into extra innings while the 33 combined runs and 44 total hits also remain top marks for the two teams.

First baseman Nate Colbert went 5-for-8 with a home run, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Centerfielder CIto Gaston went 3-for-5 with his own homerun, three RBIs, and scored three runs for the Friars. Shortstop Steve Huntz, along with catchers Chris Cannizzaro and Ron Slocum, all hit home runs to bring the Padres total for the day to five.

The Giants were led by centerfielder Willie Mays who hit 4-of-6 with two home runs, four RBIs, and three runs scored.
